How it works
Your GPA for a semester is your total grade points divided by your total credit units, where grade points come from multiplying each course's credit unit by the point value of the grade you got (on the 5.0 scale: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0). Your CGPA is the same calculation applied across every semester you've completed so far.
Worked example: this semester you took a 3-unit course (A, 5 points → 15 grade points), a 4-unit course (B, 4 points → 16 grade points), and a 2-unit course (C, 3 points → 6 grade points). That's 9 units and 37 grade points, giving a semester GPA of 37 ÷ 9 ≈ 4.11. If you entered last semester at a CGPA of 4.00 across 45 units, your new cumulative CGPA becomes (4.00×45 + 37) ÷ (45+9) ≈ 4.02.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the 5.0 and 4.0 scale?
Most Nigerian universities use a 5-point scale (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0). Polytechnics and Colleges of Education typically use a 4-point scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0). Pick the one that matches your institution.
How is CGPA different from GPA?
GPA covers a single semester. CGPA (cumulative GPA) is calculated across every semester you've completed, weighted by each semester's credit units — it's your running academic average.
Can I use this if I'm in my first semester?
Yes — leave previous CGPA and previous units at 0. Your cumulative CGPA will simply equal this semester's GPA.
Is a target CGPA the tool suggests always achievable?
Not always — if reaching your target would require an average grade point above the scale's maximum (5.0 or 4.0), it's mathematically impossible in the units remaining, and the tool will tell you so.
Does this match my university's official transcript exactly?
It uses the standard, widely-used point mapping, but some institutions round differently or classify grade boundaries slightly differently. Treat this as a very close estimate, and confirm exact figures against your official transcript.
